Painting memories…

Some of the places we have visited quickly fade from memory, while others are recalled again and again throughout our lives, in vivid colour. A childhood bedroom, grandparent’s house, a city visited years ago, a certain garden…Why do these memories remain so bright, and what exactly is our mind holding onto? My work explores the brilliant highlights of specific memories — some of which are simple and clear, while others overlay darker emotional undercurrents that may help explain why these memories have been held onto for years.

Christy Hayhoe is a painter living and working in Toronto. After growing up in South America as a child, moving to the UK as a young adult, and other extensive travels, she draws from the colours, textures, and images in her memories to create vivid paintings questioning the importance and accuracy of what we remember from the places we have been.
